Learning business English can seem daunting to start with. There’s often a lot of new vocabulary and not much of a chance to practise it. Of course, you could take an expensive business English course but not everyone has the time or money to do that.
Here are six fun ways of learning business English that you can do at home that are either free or cost very little:
1. Read the business news to pick up relevant vocabulary. Subscribe to English trade magazines or journals related to your industry.
2. Keep a work journal in English. Write down what you do every day at work in English. If there is anything you don’t know how to explain in English, you have identified a point you need to work on.
3. Translate some of your e-mails into English. Great practice in case you need to do it for real in the future.
4. Volunteer to show foreign colleagues around. If a foreign colleague has just joined you or is visiting on business, offer your services to show him or her around the city after work. It’s a great way to practise conversation and could help you make some important contacts.
5. Do your job in English. Many companies offer foreign exchange schemes between branches. Actually working in an English-speaking country is a great way of learning business English.
6. Join groups related to your business on LinkedIn or Facebook. This is a great way of learning business English and making contacts all over the world. You could also follow discussions related to your line of work on Twitter.

Top tips! All, but I especially like the suggestion to join web2.0 platforms and to participate actively in the discussions there.

Hi Karenne,
Thanks for the kind comment. I find lots of my students like practising by using web2.0 platforms because they feel more relaxed there and are able to participate in real-life interaction on topics that are relevant to their work.
I love your blog, by the way.
