Toronto is a city in Canada where English is the main language. For English learners, there are a wide range of courses available from both English language schools and great universities. The fees are also often cheaper than you would pay in London or New York.

Canadian English is interesting, because although the grammar and spelling is similar to UK English, the accent is more closely-related to US English. Make sure you don’t tell people they sound American, though. Canadians are very proud of their separate identity. You wouldn’t like it if people confused you with people from somewhere with a similar language, would you?

If you visit in the summer, there is some beautiful countryside around Toronto for hiking and walking. It can get very cold in the winter, though, so remember to be well prepared if you are visiting at that time of year.

If you’re feeling brave, you could try Canada’s national sport – ice-hockey. It’s a rough game, though, and not for the faint-hearted. If you prefer calmer activities, curling could be more appropriate for you.

Once you’re familiar with the city, you could even volunteer to show others around. What a great way to practise English!

Many people choose to emigrate to Canada from all over the world and Toronto is one of the most popular cities for immigrants to move to in Canada. Canada has a high quality of life and very fair immigration policies both of which make it very popular for skilled professionals from all over the world. Learning Canadian English could be a good move if you would like to emigrate in the future.
