2nd Friday Fun Quiz

Well, it’s that time of the week again. After a busy week of politics, sleeping tips, love triangles, and corruption, it’s time to ‘wind down‘ and start the weekend.

Bedtime

sleeping ladyLast week, I mentioned some doctors who were suffering from extreme tiredness. Maybe they would benefit from reading this article on the BBC website. I found this interesting because couples sharing a bed seems to be a common custom all over the world and, while I have never found it too disrupting to my sleep schedule, apparently some other people do.

There are some great sleep-related words and phrases in the article, as well. The first one I would like to look at is ‘duvet-hogging‘. A duvet is a thick, stuffed blanket and to ‘hog‘ something means to keep it all to yourself so to hog a duvet is when you pull it over yourself leaving your partner uncovered.

There are some more interesting expressions later in the article where Dr Neil Stanley is quoted saying:

We all know what it’s like to have a cuddle and then say ‘I’m going to sleep now’ and go to the opposite side of the bed. So why not just toddle off down the landing?

To have a ‘cuddle‘ is when you hug someone you love and to ‘toddle off‘ is to walk in a slightly unsteady way. It is more common to use the word ‘toddle‘ to talk about the way young children walk and we sometimes call children who are just beginning to walk ‘toddlers‘.

Another interesting word in this quote is ‘landing‘. A ‘landing‘ is the flat area at the top of a staircase or between to sets of stairs.

Neat the end of the article, the author mentions a ‘slumbering partner’. ‘Slumber‘ is a nice, slightly old-fashioned word for sleep.

How do you make sure you sleep well?
